Masters

Area Coach/Captain: Josephine Varney

The Masters section at West Beach SLSC is available to:

  • anyone who is over 30,

  • has their bronze,

  • is proficient, and

  • has the mandatory patrol 16 hours per calendar year necessary for all surf sports competitions.

Our masters competition group is made up of a very diverse range of people. From those who grew up in the Surf Life Saving community and love it so much that they never left (or decided they missed it too much and came back), to those who came to Surf Life Saving much later in life, with (or without) their children, got their bronze and simply decided to give it a go.

The primary goal of our Masters competitors is to use the team to better themselves, and importantly to enjoy being part of the team (often coffee-ing/breakfast-ing after training).

Within our Masters group, WBSLSC is fortunate to have some very successful competitors who medal at State, National (AUSSIEs) and at World Championships.

Clearly though, we are not all that good! So, whatever your ability level, you are welcome in our Masters group.

The Life Saving World Championships will be held on the Gold Coast in 2024 from 20-Aug to 08-Sep.

West Beach will be sending a team to this event, so let me know if you want to be involved, and for those who are going - get ready!

The World Championships have a fabulous atmosphere. It is wonderful to meet other Life Savers from around the World, and to test yourself against the best of the best.

Masters Surf Life Saving has a wide range of events available, including:

  • Beach Events: Flags, sprints, 1 and 2 km runs and beach relays.

  • Water Events: Surf swims, board, ski , ironman, surf teams, board relay, ski relay and taplin (all Masters Teams are 3 person teams)

  • Surf Boats: This is a Masters event, but is organised by the Boat Area. A great sport for any ex-rowers or people who love team events.

  • Pool Rescue: For any ex-swimmers there are masters events in Pool Rescue. Note, that like surf boats, this is organised by the Pool Rescue area.

  • Surf Life Saving: There are Masters' categories in the many Surf Life Saving events, including Champion Life Saver and RnR. (again, this is organised by the Surf Life Saving area)

Masters compete in 5 year age groups starting with the 30-34 age group and going up to 70 +

Come along and have some fun!
